Shakeology vs. Body by Vi

As a fitness coach, I get asked my opinions on everything from workout shoes to organic eggs. What I feed my family, what I suggest for weight loss meal plans….you name it, I’ve been asked! Recently I had an interesting conversation in one of my challenge groups on Facebook after a group member asked the difference between Shakeology (something I drink daily) and Body by Vi. While I am of course biased to Shakeology, I in no way think Body by Vi is a bad product, I just prefer Shakeology because of the benefits I know it has provided me after two kids, a csection and weight gain.

Body by Vi- $49 – $250 per month, depending on which “level” of program you buy. (this means you don’t have a set cost)

Shakeology- $90-120 per month (If you’re a coach, you get a discount!)

Does it have any of that “fake” stuff in it?

Body by Vi – Yes – sucralose. This is nasty, nasty stuff! Steer clear.

Shakeology – Not one ingredient! Shakeology is also gluten free and they have 2 Vegan formulas!

Body by Vi – 90 calories + milk and/or fruit

Shakeology – 140 calories for green berry, 150 for chocolate, plus what you add (try almond milk for 40 calories!)

Both are a yes on this one! I’ve tried all 4 different kinds of Shakeology (Chocolate, Vegan Chocolate, Tropical, and Greenberry) and can say you can add just about anything to these shakes.

My experience with Shakeology is that it takes 30 days to create a habit. I tell all my group members and clients about this theory. Shakeology is like an assistance tool that feeds your body, fuels it and creates a solid foundation for your good choices. It’s very easy.

What mom out there wouldn’t love to have at least ONE of her meals accounted for everyday? Throw it in the blender or a shaker bottle and you’re set. It’s customized to you, peanut butter, bananas, fruit, OJ….even add in a little flax seed meal or protein powder if you wish. It’s YOUR drink. Make it how you like it. I don’t know about you, but I started the New Year off with a bang. Most people tend to get excited about taking on a new goal: weight loss, spending more time with family, reducing debt; it’s part of the spirit of a new season.

This January, I decided to start fitness challenge groups! What better way to get Beachbody workouts combined with group momentum and excitement to get healthy, than a good old-fashioned challenge?

Jocelyn C. Beachbody Challenge

A 25 year old work-a-holic, who has 2 high stress jobs, works anywhere between 50-70 hours per week. Jocelyn has every excuse to be tired!  I met Jocelyn about 2 years ago when my sister Shell and Jocelyn graduated from the Oakland Police academy together.

Biggest Struggle: She refers to herself as being a picky eater who loves fruits and veggies, loves to exercise and goes to the gym. You might question WHY she’s in one of my challenge groups. While she eats well and exercises, her mid-section is admittedly her toughest area to keep in shape. Jocelyn tells me, “Oh boy, some days it just feels like a losing battle.”

Favorite Tools: “I love Chocolate Shakeology!! It has increased my energy levels 100%. I use to drink (2) cups of coffee before I left the house, 1 on my way into work, and have a few cups after getting there. By lunch, I’d switch to diet soda and would have 2 a day!” As her coach, I’m proud to say as of January 13 (her start date on Shakeology) she has stopped drinking pop and coffee. Go Jocelyn!

We all do! Here are some common ones I get I all the time from my clients. 

Q: I barely eat anything all day. Why can’t I lose weight?

A: That’s the problem, you need to eat and do so quite frequently. It’s called “Grazing”. The concept is to eat small healthy meals/snack every 2-3 hours which will train the body to burn more calories and create a BOOMING metabolism. Not eating causes your body to go into a starvation response which will actually cause the metabolism to slow and store the calories. 

Q: Won’t lifting heavy weights make me look like a guy?

A: MYTH. A woman’s body lacks the testosterone that a man has therefore we cannot build muscle mass like they can.  Muscle burns fat. The more muscle you have the more calories you will burn. In addition a female will have a smaller size and still be able to weigh more than another woman because muscle is much more dense. Like the saying goes “Lift like a guy, look like a Godess.”

Q: Is there something I can eat that is quick and good for me?

A: If you have a blender, ice, water, 5 minutes, and Shakeology the answer is ABSOLUTELY and it tastes great!  Shakeology is a complete meal replacement shake. It supplies the body with vitamins, nutrients, digestive enzymens, probiotics, is low in sugar and 150 calories (chocolate).

The Shakeology Cleanse

Many of you ask me about the cleanse I do every couple of months.  I follow one that utilizes Shakeology, a product of Beachbody. 

Before I get into what the actual Shakeology Cleanse plan looks like, lets understand what the cleanse is. It is a 3 day calorie-restricting, nutrient dense eating plan.  It’s intended to flush toxins from the body. It is most commonly used to “jump start” a new nutrition plan or “break through” a current plateau in regards to weight loss. The Shakeology Cleanse is 800-1200 calories per day.  Loaded with nutrients and vitamins. And in my opinion very filling. However it is very challenging.  The Shakeology Cleanse only lasts 3 days, but I will be the first to admit that day 4 comes just in time. 

My Personal Experience

Day 1 to me is very challenging because you are just having to do something different. The body is detoxing and I found it hard to not have the “normal” foods that I ate the day before.  However since it is day 1 there is an excitement that propels you to push through and accomplish the day. Day 2 in my opinion is the easiest day.  You are half way there. The body is not craving the day before bad foods so it seems to cooperate pretty well.  Then comes day 3…I am so ready for hearty food by day 3.  Its getting boring and hard to stay disciplined BUT this is also when the mind becomes your greatest tool. It becomes mental that you finish this last day and SUCCEED at the 3 day cleanse.  If you do this, the results are always worth it.  In the multiple times I have done the Shakeology Cleanse I have on average lost 4 pounds.  I’m not a large person so I’m very happy with that number. In addition to the pounds which are mostly water weight, I feel lean and tight. The bloated feeling is gone.  So is it worth it? I say absolutely so long as you are using it for the benefits that it can yield. I like to use it before a vacation or special outing to just help me feel better. 

Here’s the Shakoelogy plan that I follow.  It is NOT Recommended that you participate in the cleanse more than 1 time every 30 days. Also light exercise is permitted, however it is not recommended that a person participates in intense physical activity.  I will say that I have found my energy to be sustainable during the cleanse and I am able to keep up with my exercise regimen.  I attribute that to all the vitamins and nutrients that are in Shakeology.  Obviously everybody’s different so you need to listen to your body.  Its also smart to clear this by your doctor first if you have medical conditions that make you question whether this cleanse is suitable for you. 

THE PLAN

START: 1 cup green tea (I am simple and use the lipton brand or even an off brand green tea)

BREAKFAST: Shakeology shake (made with water and ice only) 1/2 piece of fruit may be added

SNACK: 1 piece of fruit

LUNCH: Shakeology shake (made with water and ice only) followed by 1 cup of green tea

SNACK: Shakeology shake (made with water and ice only) NOTE**this shake can be consumed after dinner instead.

DINNER: Salad with greens with 2 tbsp low fat salad dressing NOTE**salad may be consumed at lunch instead of dinner.

              3 servings of veggies

              4 ounces grilled, white meat or fish (or tofu, beans or vegetarian)

LOTS of water!  I personally attempt 1/2 my body weight in ounces of water daily. Ideally it is recommended that adults consume a minimum of 64 ounces of water daily. 

So as you can read things like coffee, dairy, and breads are GONE. Told you its not easy. I’m a 4 cups of coffee kinda mama, so the mornings are rough.  If you stick with it though, the scale number and the way the jeans fit make it worth it.

A Super Saturday with Shaun T!

WOW!  What more can I say about the amazing experience I had on Feb 12, 2011.  Myself and about 300 people (shout out to Kimberly, Jen, Kristy, Mary, Amanda, and Kim) were fortunate enough to spend a saturday morning in Columbus OH where we were inspired, educated, motivated and wow’d by Tommy Mygrant, Shaun T and Team Beachbody.

The fantastic trip started on Friday as Jen, Kristy, Kimberly and I jumped in the Jeep and headed south.  4 hours of driving and some Jimmy Johns for dinner later we had arrived at the hotel.  Some girl talk and a cocktail later it was time to call it a night cuz we had a date to get our butts kicked by Mr. T in the morning. The alarm clocks sounded and we jumped out of bed and got ready.  Yes, we got ready to go workout, lol.  Hair did, makeup done, cute outfits on and breakfast consumed we were ready for the epic event.

The event began at 9am with a coaching prospect talk followed by some yummy Shakeology tasting.  This was my first encounter with Greenberry.  Gotta declare that I’m sticking with Chocolate.  During the Shakeology break I had the extreme pleasure of meeting Barbie Decker.  She is someone who I have found to be very inspiring both for her physical transformation and also for her success as a coach, and there she was all the way from Texas.  Heck yeah I’m making a point to introduce myself to her and tell her I think she’s awesome.  For the record she was very nice and humble, exactly what a role model should be.

Back to the event…it also featured about 7 success stories.  People who had found financial and physical improvements in their life because of Beachbody products and coaching.  These stories are what move you.  The extreme weight loss, improved health, fulfilling their dreams, living again.  LOVED it!  After some fun, it was time for a bit of business.  It’s nice to know that a company is committed to providing you with training that will make you better.  Tommy Mygrant hosted a wonderfully funny session.  When talking about what Shakeology can do for you, I think his line “ripped and regular” will always stick, lol.  Tommy asked the best question though.  Tommy asked “is Shaun here yet?!?!”  SAY WHAT, WHERE?  Standing in the doorway, that’s where. And the crowd went wild standing up, taking pics, hoot’n and holler’n.

Shaun T (Thompson for those who don’t know) ROCKED.  He was extremely kind, funny, informative, real and motivating.  He started with Q & A and this is what he shared

  • He loves peanut M&M’s
  • First question asked “Can we see your abs?”. His response… shirt lifted.
  • His personal workouts are very much what you get with Insanity.  He doesn’t even lift weights for his legs.  Perfect form is key.
  • “Abs are made in the kitchen”. He is not on a diet plan its a lifestyle plan.
  • Don’t be afraid to tweak a menu, ever.
  • Be sure to carry snacks with you.
  • His breakfast: 8 egg whites, 1/2 cantaloupe, 2 pcs 7 grain toast, avocado
  • Beachbody questioned him being the best suited for Insanity since he was the Hip Hop Abs guy.  He was told to prove it and I think we all know he did.
  • He is passionate about kids fitness, but believes it’s the parents responsibility.

After Q & A, was workout time!!! An actual live Insanity workout with the creator.  Its hard enough when I do it in my living room now I have to do it with him in the room and 300 others too. I was just hoping I didn’t puke (I didn’t, close but didn’t).  The workout was made up on the fly.  He said he likes doing it that way cuz its harder that way.  Told you he was a nice guy, thanks for caring Shaun, lol.  Needless to say he kicked our butts.  It was hard, but also the best.  I was bent over, yelling, clapping my hands, telling myself this is a very rare opportunity so suck it up and DIG DEEPER!  After about 45 minutes of intervals, moving push ups, planks, squats, high knees and tuck jumps we were done.  I had survived.  Whats the reward for surviving…a pic with Shaun T.  It was a long line but worth the wait.  The entire event was worth it.

Only things I can say I wish had been different. I wish I had taken my copy of Insanity to get autographed or came up with something creative for him to sign. And I was hoping for apparel and gear to be for sale.  I would have loved to buy a shirt in honor of the great day spent with a great trainer, great team and especially my great friends who did it all with me.
