Beachbody Before and After Success Story: Kimberly Hogan

How do you sum up a best friend? Here’s my shot at it in 140 characters:

Wife. Mom of 2. Commercial Leasing Agent. Former Police Officer. Faith Driven. Classically Trained Vocalist. Mom on a Mission. Success Story!

I’ll let Kimberly tell her own story…there are some “Awww, shucks!” moments in here that make me thankful for a friend like her! Get ’em girl! You look great! I’m so proud of you.

WHO IS KIMBERLY?

My name is Kimberly Hogan, and I work full time doing Commercial Leasing and reside in MI, with my husband, Joe, of 5 years. Joe is a Police Officer, and we met in the Police Academy. Before we had children, I was a police officer too…you can call me a “former” 🙂 We have 2 BEAUTIFUL children. My little boy is sweet, compassionate, outgoing, conversational, and rugged. And well, my little girl who will be 2 in July is my shot of life – a firecracker with the greatest personality. She is a goofball who is super girlie and she goes after what she wants…NOTHING stands in her way. Guess you could say she reminds me of myself a bit!

I am a part of a large family, so I always knew having a family was a must in my life. Along with the importance of my family and my faith in Christ, is my passion and sisterly bond with the FRIENDS who are closest to me. I’ve always heard, “You are the 5 people you surround yourself with the most.” Christina is my best friend and we inspire each other in different ways. Who doesn’t want a best friend who makes you WANT to be better? We’ve known each other for a little over 3 years and this is about the time I started my fitness journey. Christina was a big part of that. She’s the sister I never had (no, literally, I have 2 brothers and have always wanted a sister!)

To sum up my “Who are you?” I have a long list of folks that I love. They’re the first part of who I am. But more importantly, I’m something to someone and want to be the driving force in their life that makes them a better them.

Before and After Insanity - Success Story Kimberly Hogan

I started using Beachbody products because the key to squashing skepticism is actually doing what you’re talking about doing. I figured with Beachbody products, the proof is in the pudding, so why not give it a shot? With my 5’10 tall frame, I can EASILY mask weight gain. After having 2 children, I didn’t feel like a spring chicken anymore. Enter Insanity, Shakeology, Insanity: The Asylum, Energy and Endurance, and Results and Recovery. I choose higher interval workouts, because I knew from my Police Academy training that my body responds much better to in-your-face, drowning-in-a-pool-of-sweat workouts. Mix that with a great meal replacement shake, you have yourself a success.

MOTIVATE US KIMBERLY!

First and foremost, the biggest thing that was always nagging my mind was my “stop and go” fitness. Who hasn’t experienced that awfulness? An example of this is: you start off with great motivation and great intentions, only to find it dwindling down a few weeks later. The worst part? Most likely you didn’t just fall off the wagon, you face planted off that wagon.

For me, what finally pushed me to my breaking point in my success was forming a CHALLENGE GROUP. I had a group of 5 people, ALSO doing Insanity and Shakeology, who had the same goal as me. I was the leader. They were watching me. That was it for me. I wanted to be the one walking around in a bikini this summer and not have to suck in my gut.

I wanted to create MY victory. And I did. I want it for everyone else too. No one makes your victory happen except for YOU. You can stare at the success stories, and read reviews on products for hours. The main ingredient most people are missing is the constant DRIVE. I’m just like every other mother out there wanting to create something GOOD for themselves. It wasn’t easy. It took hours of blood, sweat, tears, and planning, but every time I felt the need to quit, skip a day, eat pizza, I went back to my original WHY.

Christina Volk began teaching group exercise classes and workingout while in college. She obtained a Bachelors of Science degree in Exercise Science from Central Michigan University in December 1999. She worked as a Fitness Consultant, Personal Trainer and Group Exercise Coordintor for a massive corporate fitness center; Dominos Farms in Ann Arbor, MI for 4 years. After experiencing success personally using the Beachbody programs, she became an Independent Beachbody Coach and started her fitness consulting business in April 2009. Currently she helps others achieve their fitness goals by leading them to the programs that will best match their needs. She is also a certified TurboKick instructor.

A DIAMOND BEACHBODY COACH DINNER INVITATION

Last weekend, I got to spend a wonderful evening with some amazing ladies who are my core fitness support system. Even a fitness coach needs a group! This was a wonderful evening spent with wonderful people. There is always one person that stands out when we get together as a group. She inspires me as a woman and a fitness coach. That person is Jenelle Summers.

Jenelle (top row, second from the right) is my business mentor and my Beachboady coach. She’s also the sister of fitness celebrity Chalene Johnson (Chalene Extreme, Turbo Jam, TurboFire). If you’ve done any of her videos, you’re bound to have seen her. She kicks butt in those classes. Once a year, as a special treat, Jenelle invites her coaches who are ranked Diamond and above, to celebrate what we have achieved in our business’, with a fabulous evening out on the town. This year was just that…FABULOUS!

Before I launch into how wonderful Beachbody is and the fact that I’m a WAHM (Work at Home Mom), let me first say that it’s changed my life personally. I’ve used the products, I’ve gotten the results from hard work, and I’m committed to women getting fit and healthy.

I love the fact that I can stay home with my kids, while promoting a healthy lifestyle and running a business supporting that mission. Many people say this on their blogs, in fact, how am I different than any other coach? Questions that might run through your mind when you stumble across my blog are, “Aren’t you out to just sell me a “shake-in-a-bag” or get me signed up as a coach?” Yes. I wouldn’t be being honest if I didn’t say I’d hope you’d choose me to be your coach and try Shakeology (“shake-in-a-bag.”) But… this isn’t the reason I love my job.

I love my job as a fitness coach because it changes people’s lives! I love helping people get fit and healthy!

Yogurt Stop! Diamond Coaches Dinner

Our evening started with a limo bus ride to Yogurt Vi, a very delicious yogurt bar. Girls gotta eat! We then ran down to Lady Foot Locker (not literally, it was a non-workout get together) for some shoe shopping. We’re fitness people; we get excited over a great pair of shoes! After our shopping spree, we arrived at Dick’s Sporting Goods where we were gifted with exercise apparel!

Japanese Steak House Diamond Coaches DinnerLast stop: Dinner. We indulged at Nagoya Japanese Steak House. YUM!!! It was a great night of food and fun, but more than anything, it was a great night with friends; friends that encourage and support me to be a better, happier, healthier person. I dream of the day I can take my Diamond Team to dinner! Not for the money, but for the camaraderie and support of other women just like me. We’re changing lives, one workout at a time!

Insanity, Turbofire, Slim in 6, Brazil Butt Lift – Before and After Results!

I’m constantly amazed at how fabulous all of my challenge group participants are. They never cease to go above and beyond. Not only did they push themselves by ‘Pressing Play’ everyday, but they supported the other team members in their groups and some of them even became coaches! I’m a one proud Beachbody Coach right now!

Doing this challenge has giving me the willpower to succeed. Knowing that the other group members are working hard to obtain their goals pushes me to go as hard as they do. I have gained so much knowledge about nutrition and fitness and it is something that I find myself sharing with others everyday. I will continue to work hard to reach my goal even after the challenge is over.

I have always had this goal in the back of my head (but its pretty much always stayed there). What body type I want to be, how I want to look. This has been my first time saying I want something and sticking to it. Not only have I lost weight & inches, I gained so much wonderful muscle tone and strength.

Anyone can say they are going to go home and press play on their TV and get there workout done, but can’t you always find something else to distract you from accomplishing that goal, the group made me want to be accountable, made me want to do that work and post it. I did not want to let them down as much as I did not want to let myself down.

In April 2011 I had my 3rd baby by c-section. Shortly after childbirth and weighing the most I have ever in my life at 172 lbs in a size XL, I was able to loose all my baby weight on my own between my post-partum checkup on June 1,2011 and Thanksgiving. I did this the only way I knew how, consistant cardiovascular exercise and moderate dieting. On Thanksgiving Day 2011 I finally got in my size 8 jean and weighed around 145 lbs.

I wanted more…not necessarily a huge weight loss number, but I wanted to flatten my beat up abdominal muscles. My challenge started January 2012. At first I had no idea of which workout video to claim as my own because I had never done a workout video in my life! Exercise to me was all cardio, and there was nothing else, period. It took me a few weeks, a little trial and error, before I finally settled with INSANITY. Although it was difficult, it was easy to follow, and I found myself sweating like never before. I have finished my 60 days of INSANITY and now have good defination in my abdominal muscles. I have also gained noticeable back muscle defination.

My jean size shrank from a size 8 to a size 4 and I can honestly say now I buy smalls instead of extra large:)

Beachbody, and my personal coach, Christina Massey Volk, have taught me there is more to exercise than cardio! Despite the fact I still consider myself primarily a runner, I will continue to use beachbody videos to crosstrain and to hopefully one day turn my new “four pack” post c-section abs to a full “6 pack” post c-section abs! I will also continue to drink Shakeology daily, because I honestly believe it has been a contributing factor to my success…not to mention it tastes good and is super good for you! Why would I give that up?

I really wanted to do Insanity, but didn’t feel I was fit enough to dive right into it, so I did Slim in 6, worked out on my elliptical trainer, and about once a week did an Insanity workout. The next month I plunged into Insanity and I haven’t looked back! I lost 10 pounds, 4 inches off my waist, 3 inches off my chest and 3 inches off my hips. I also went from wearing a tight size 10 to a loose size 6! I’ve got more energy and I feel and look stronger. As the mother of 3 small children, it hasn’t always been easy finding time for my workouts and eating right, but the payoff has been so worth it! I saw some friends tonight that I had not seen in several months and they gave me so many compliments on my new look. One of them is even interested in trying Shakeology! This is only the start of my fitness journey and I couldn’t be happier!

 

I’m SO proud of my challenge graduates you see here as well as the others that aren’t highlighted. I couldn’t have asked for a more willing group of participants. They stuck with it and are now reaping the benefits and seeing fabulous results. While they aren’t finished (none of us are!) they now know what needs to happen to maintain their healthy lifestyles. NIKE FREE TR FIT 2 Review

Hey friends and fitness family! Wanted to shoot out a quick blog since I’ve been getting quite a few questions lately on all things fitness. I love it! Keep ’em coming. As a Beachbody coach & a fitness instructor, I’m always being asked my opinion on things like: workouts, footwear, exercise equipment, meals, etc. So, I thought I’d answer a couple, for all to see and read. I hope this specific blog helps you in your search for great footwear!

What kind of shoes do you wear?

Let me tell you my story: I went to the store with intentions to purchase the Nike Free Run. I loved the design of the shoe. However, after doing a bit more research I learned of the Nike Free TR Fit 2. The Nike Free TR Fit 2 is designed for multi-directional movements like those performed in my exercise sessions when doing Insanity, TurboFire, Cardio machines, and weight training. The Nike Run is designed for front/back movement.  So I had to go with function what was best designed for my training regimen.
Pros
  • BAREFOOT – The “Barfeoot like flexibility plus support” is spot on. Plyable yet offers cushion vs barefoot training
  • FEELS – Like a watershoe. It’s ULTRA-light, the interior molds comfortably to the foot and it has improved my agility.
  • BREATHABILITY – Even during intense exercise sessions my feet stay cool due to the breathable mesh composition
  • COMFORT – Amazing comfort. I could wear them all day. Sometimes I do!
  • NO TINGLING! Absolutely no tingling sensation in my feet with this shoe like I’ve experienced with other traditional training shoes.
  • FASHION – Super cute! Energetic color options. Fun details.
  • $$ – Worth every penny spent ($90.00)
Cons
  • SUPPORT – Not the best for ankle support. Due to the mesh and flexibility there isnt alot of structural substance.
  • PRICE – Although absolutely worth it to me, $90 for some is definitely an investment in their footwear.

Who Am I?

Got Questions?

We all do! Here are some common ones I get I all the time from my clients. 

Q: I barely eat anything all day. Why can’t I lose weight?

A: That’s the problem, you need to eat and do so quite frequently. It’s called “Grazing”. The concept is to eat small healthy meals/snack every 2-3 hours which will train the body to burn more calories and create a BOOMING metabolism. Not eating causes your body to go into a starvation response which will actually cause the metabolism to slow and store the calories. 

Q: Won’t lifting heavy weights make me look like a guy?

A: MYTH. A woman’s body lacks the testosterone that a man has therefore we cannot build muscle mass like they can.  Muscle burns fat. The more muscle you have the more calories you will burn. In addition a female will have a smaller size and still be able to weigh more than another woman because muscle is much more dense. Like the saying goes “Lift like a guy, look like a Godess.”

Q: Is there something I can eat that is quick and good for me?

A: If you have a blender, ice, water, 5 minutes, and Shakeology the answer is ABSOLUTELY and it tastes great!  Shakeology is a complete meal replacement shake. It supplies the body with vitamins, nutrients, digestive enzymens, probiotics, is low in sugar and 150 calories (chocolate).
